No Safe Bets Here – Predicting the Sixers v. Celtics Game 6

I am terrible at predicting events with Tarot.   Of course, it’s always a 50/50 shot – you’re either right or you’re wrong.  But, I tend to see what I want to see, because I generally throw cards for things I have a stake in.  For instance, when the Eagles were in the Super Bowl, I posted these cards, and predicted a win for my hometown team, the Eagles:

No photo description available. And this is what I said, “My totally nonobjective Super Bowl prediction! Will the Eagles win the Super Bowl? I didn’t bother to do a row for the Chiefs because to me they are irrelevant. So yes, the Eagles are headed towards a win. The Wheel will turn in the Birds favor as they ride into victory, and the streets of Philly will flow with beer.” I posted this in a class with Camelia Elias and Bent Sorenson, and Camelia correctly pointed out that because I had discounted the other team, I was reading for my heart’s desire, and with that nine of cups at the end, the Chariot is moving into that realm as well.  For a win, we’d expect to see gold on the table, coins, not cups.  And, she was right.  In this case, the cups were not beer, they were tears.  Or perhaps they were the beer, that was consumed in sadness.  In any event, I wanted the Eagles to win, and I read the cards for the win.

And frankly, why would I want to pull cards and predict a loss?  That’s no fun.  It’s like betting against your team.  Yeah, I predicted the game, but darn, my team lost.  Who wants to watch that angsty spectacle?  It’s hard enough watching a sporting event with only your heart at stake.  When the Sixers blew their big lead in Game 4, and had to go into overtime, eventually winning by 1 point, I was ready to give up sports altogether.

But, I’m not a good lesson learner, and I couldn’t help myself – I did it again.  Pulled cards to predict my hometown Sixers game against the Celtics, game 6 in a 7 game series, in which if the Sixers win, they advance to the Conference Finals to play the winner of the Knicks v. Heat series.

So, let’s shuffle up those cards and take a peek:

First, before I asked the big question, will they win?  I asked a few set up questions.

Joel Embiid, our big man and the League MVP, injured his knee during the  Sixers series with the Nets.  It was an injury that would take a normal person at least a month to come back from, but Joel was back on the court in a week.  First, he wore a heavy knee brace, and then a knee sleeve.  He looked really good in Game 5, but a bit out of gas in the 4th Quarter.  Before each game the talking heads have asked, will this be the game in which we see the MVP?  So, that’s what I asked.

So, I don’t know in what world the creepy Valet of Swords ends up an MVP.  If I wanted to read the cards in a positive way, I guess he could be a spoiler.  But, a valet is not an MVP, a hero.  A Knight or a King could be an MVP, but the Valet of Swords ruling the court?  I don’t think so.  So, I read them this way – when the sun goes down (the Moon), and they are on the championship court (4 coins), Embiid will be the disappointed child.  If I were going to read them in a positive way, I guess I’d go “the lobster emerges from his slumber, to be a champion on the court, spoiling the other team.”  I’m going to go with a less than MVP performance.  Stinkin’ Valet.

If MVP Embiid isn’t going to show up, will former MVP James Harden show up, or will we see the tentative, slow, inaccurate James Harden we saw in Game 2?

So, I thought – this is good – here we have the man of experience, and the workhorse King.  But then, oh no – a lot of pain in the middle, and a 10 at the end, a full stop card with a spilled cup.  So, I predict King James will show up, but suffer an injury, and the game will be over for him.  A could go this way – the workhorse King will penetrate the other team’s defense, and close out the series – but I’d be more inclined to go that way without the spilled cup – if there 10 coins at the end.  So, alas, I’m going with the pain goes to James unfortunately, not the Celtics.

Things are looking bad.  So here it goes – final question – will the Sixers win game 6?

Ambivalent play, and poor communication on the court will lead to a tied 3-3 series.

Sigh.  Hopefully, I have overcompensated for reading for my heart’s desire, and leaned in too much on a negative spin.  But, a positive spin on the last three cards?  Cupid takes out Harden, and the Sixers play with some kind of moonlit madness, expanding into the next round?  In a contest of two, they emerge in the top heart as the gold coin winner? There are gold coins on the table, but I just don’t think enough.  3 coins in your pocket doesn’t feel like a conference semi-final win.  I’d say we’re going to game 7.  And if we do, I’m not pulling any cards for that game, my heart won’t be able to take it.

If you have another take on any of these cards, feel free to share in the comments!

I’ll come back tomorrow and we’ll see how I did.  My husband is pretty confident, going with his gut, that the Sixers are going to win tonight, and close out the series.  So, if I were going to put money on the game, would I go with the cards or my husband’s gut?  the odds are the same on both – a 50/50 shot – either right or wrong – but no betting for me.  That I really couldn’t take – to lose my heart and my money, sheesh.
